The Big Five in Tanzania—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros—are iconic, large mammals once classified by hunters as the most difficult and dangerous to track on foot. Today, they are the stars of Tanzania's wildlife safaris, best spotted in protected areas like the Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park, and Nyerere National Park.
The Big Five Animals in Tanzania
Lion (Simba): Tanzania has one of the largest lion populations in Africa. They are highly social, living in prides, and are easily spotted in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
Leopard (Chui): Known for being elusive and solitary, leopards are often found lounging in acacia trees or along rivers in the Serengeti. They are the most difficult of the five to spot.
Elephant (Ndovu/Tembo): The African bush elephant is commonly seen in herds in Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti.
Buffalo (Nyati): Considered very dangerous, buffaloes are found in large, social herds across many Tanzanian parks, often near water sources.
Rhinoceros (Kifaru): The black rhino is the most endangered of the Big Five. The Ngorongoro Crater is the best location in Tanzania to spot them, as they are well-protected there.
Best Places to Spot the Big Five
Ngorongoro Crater: The premier location to see all five in a single day, particularly the black rhino.
Serengeti National Park: Excellent for spotting lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo, especially in the central Seronera area.
Tarangire National Park: Renowned for its high density of elephants.
Nyerere National Park (Selous): A large, remote park offering great opportunities to see all five.
